Apple’s new opt-in Reference Image mode on iPhone 18 Pro creates a cryptographically signed raw “digital negative” that users can compare against edited or reposted versions of a photo.
When enabled, the main sensor sends the signed raw image to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute service, while the finished photo still appears normally in the camera and Photos apps.
iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate can already display a Reference badge, and Apple is releasing an API for third-party apps before publishing broader Windows, Android and browser documentation next year.
Later this year, Reference Images altered or created with Apple’s AI tools will also carry Google DeepMind’s SynthID watermark, pairing original-image verification with AI-edit detection.
The feature extends an industry push against AI-manipulated media, with Google expanding SynthID across Gemini and search tools and Samsung already adding C2PA credentials to Galaxy AI-edited photos.
