Publicly available documents do show that Crooks lived a highly private life: he used the pseudonym “Bob Dole” for package deliveries, tried to obscure online purchases, and kept much of his activity from his family. But investigators have not linked the cremation payment to any friend, associate, online contact, or accomplice. The most grounded inference from the records is financial, not conspiratorial. Notes in the file indicate Crooks’ father was unemployed or retired and his mother was on leave from work, suggesting the family may have struggled to cover funeral costs. In that context, the anonymous donor may simply have been someone willing to help with expenses. Newly released FBI files given to the Senate identified a Snapchat account — username "tom_crooks19" — tied to Thomas Crooks, adding a fresh digital lead in the July 13, 2024 attempt on Donald Trump.
The same records also point to an Amazon account, a Gmail account and a Mailfence encrypted email account that Crooks accessed multiple times between April 15 and July 8, 2024.
Retired FBI agent Jason Pack said Snapchat data can remain recoverable despite disappearing messages, though he cautioned Crooks may have limited what investigators could find by using aliases and trying to hide his digital footprint.
FBI Director Kash Patel told a Senate hearing Tuesday that investigators still have found no evidence Crooks coordinated with anyone else, saying he appeared to communicate only with his parents.
