That proposal quickly drew split reactions: Rep. Jasmine Crockett called it a sign voters are hurting, while Rep. Beth Van Duyne said any payments would require congressional approval and a plan to fund them.
Ken Paxton's Senate race emerged as a central target of the gathering, and his campaign moved immediately afterward to buy multiple ad spots for the opening of the NFL season against Democrat James Talarico.
SMU professor Matthew Wilson said the convention's main test will come in November, with any voter bump not expected in polls for another week or two and the format's future unclear.
