T-Mobile to Charge $5 a Month for Apple iPhone Handoff Ahead of iOS 27 Launch

Carriers are charging because iPhone Handoff is not just an Apple software trick; it requires the mobile operator to provision and manage a second eSIM tied to the same number and to support live switching between two devices. Even though only one iPhone is active at a time, the carrier still has to maintain a companion SIM profile, authenticate the second device on the network, and handle routing for calls, texts, voicemail, data, hotspot and related services when the active phone changes. In practice, carriers are treating iPhone Handoff like a MultiSIM or secondary-line service, which many have long charged for with tablets, smartwatches and extra phones. Deutsche Telekom is doing exactly that: it includes Handoff through its existing MultiSIM product, which normally costs extra unless a plan already bundles it. T-Mobile is applying a separate $5 monthly fee in the US. Carriers also retain control over parts of the service that Apple cannot provide on its own. Apple’s support documents say carrier support is required, and functions such as caller ID, call forwarding and carrier account management remain tied to the main iPhone. Turning the feature off may also require contacting the carrier, showing that this is partly a network service, not only a handset feature. So the fee is less about paying twice for the same plan and more about paying for an added carrier capability: one number, two iPhones, with network-level switching and extra provisioning behind the scenes.
