Q: How did a disastrous, controversial ad cost a popular golf brand its major partnership and a PGA Tour sponsorship?

A backlash over a Good Good Golf ad showing co-founder Garrett Clark shoulder-checking golfer Alexis Miestowski to the ground cost the brand both its Callaway partnership and its PGA Tour event sponsorship. The ad was created to promote a co-branded Callaway driver, but critics said it trivialized violence against women and was fundamentally at odds with golf’s push to be more inclusive. Good Good and Callaway both removed the video and apologized, with Clark later calling it a “super dumb” concept and “the worst ad known to man.” Callaway CEO Chip Brewer acknowledged that the company had approved the ad before it was posted. The fallout escalated quickly. Callaway ended its relationship with Good Good effective immediately, saying its review process had failed and announcing $1 million in donations to organizations working to prevent violence against women and support survivors. Major retailers also began pulling Good Good merchandise, and Golf Channel scrapped the planned “Big Break x Good Good” series. The PGA Tour then lost confidence in keeping Good Good attached to its November event in Austin. After discussions with the tour, Good Good said it would step away as title sponsor, and the tournament was renamed the Austin Championship. Tour leadership had already said the video was not aligned with PGA Tour values and had criticized Good Good’s initial response as too slow and defensive. In short, the ad triggered a reputational crisis that made the partnerships untenable.
