By contrast, the “revenge dress” is culturally more famous than many of Diana’s other outfits, but auction houses do not price only on fame. They weigh prior sale history, condition, comparable results, buyer appetite in a given category and how aggressively they want to position a lot. This dress last sold in 1997 for roughly $64,000, which also anchors expectations, even if the market has changed dramatically since then. Its estimate may therefore reflect caution rather than doubt about its importance. In fact, the dress’s symbolism, global recognition and long absence from the market could easily drive the final price well above $300,000. Sotheby’s appears to be leaving room for that possibility rather than guaranteeing it in advance.
