Hiker Finds 2 Human Remains on Georgia's Mount Yonah as State Investigators Probe Deaths

Q: Were the two bodies found on the popular Georgia hiking trail victims of a tragic climbing accident or something far more sinister?

It is too early to say whether the two people found on Mount Yonah died in a climbing accident or under suspicious circumstances. What is confirmed is limited: a hiker found the remains around 11:20 a.m. on Sept. 9 on the popular White County mountain, and the White County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Region 8 Crime Scene Unit all responded. Authorities have not identified the dead, disclosed their ages or genders, or released a cause or manner of death. They also have not said how long the remains were there or whether foul play is suspected. Mount Yonah’s terrain leaves both possibilities open. It is a heavily used hiking and rock-climbing destination with a steep trail, exposed granite, light scrambling, and known rescue incidents involving stranded climbers. Two sets of human remains were found on Mount Yonah in White County at about 11:20 a.m. on Sept. 9 after a hiker alerted authorities.
White County sheriff's investigators, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the GBI's Region 8 Crime Scene Unit responded, and the investigation was still active Wednesday.
Authorities have not identified the two people or disclosed their ages, genders, causes of death or how long the remains had been on the mountain.
The sheriff's office also has not said whether foul play is suspected, leaving key questions unresolved at the popular northeast Georgia hiking destination near Helen and Cleveland.
