Summary
Sheriff Jim Cooper said the 22-year-old gunman chased down a 38-year-old woman outside a Sacramento Panera Bread on Tuesday and shot her multiple times before a close-range head shot.
Months of stalking preceded the killing, investigators said: the woman found an Apple AirTag under her hood in January, and Rohit Rohit allegedly deflated her tire, entered her apartment and later violated a restraining order.
Witness photos and Flock camera data helped deputies track Rohit within minutes to eastbound Highway 50 at Watt Avenue, where he stopped during a standoff and shot himself.
Detectives are still examining how he got the apartment key and firearm, and whether the restraining order should have barred him from possessing the gun.
The sheriff's office said Rohit had no known local criminal history and is continuing the investigation to reconstruct the case for the victim's family.
