A 15.5-minute standing ovation greeted “Bunker” at its Venice premiere Tuesday night, prompting Penélope Cruz to sob, kiss co-star and husband Javier Bardem, and thank fans.
That reception is the strongest at Venice 2026 so far, trailing only Pedro Almodóvar’s 17-minute ovation for “The Room Next Door” in 2024 among recent festival highs.
Florian Zeller brought the cast — including Patrick Schwarzenegger and Paul Dano — forward one by one as applause continued past the 10-minute mark at the Palazzo del Cinema.
The film follows a marriage unraveling after Bardem’s architect agrees to build a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire, extending themes of wealth, isolation and political anxiety Cruz highlighted earlier in Venice.
