Photos released Saturday showed part of the Kennedy Center’s main-hall ceiling collapsed after a rainstorm, sharpening the case for shutting the 50-year-old building for repairs.
Kennedy Center spokesperson Roma Daravi said the failure reflected decades of deferred maintenance and backed the Trump-led board’s plan to close the venue for two years for renovation and revitalization.
That board approved the closure in August and is still in court seeking to proceed with the shutdown, $250 million in renovations and Trump-related naming changes at the institution.
Opponents including Keep the KC founder Grace Terpstra said the board would use the collapse to argue the entire center must close, underscoring the political and legal fight over the building’s future.
