VS Code 1.136, released Sept. 2, adds a preview Agent Merge tool that asks an AI agent to resolve review feedback, failed checks and merge conflicts until a pull request is ready to merge.
The update also introduces experimental multi-root workspaces for GitHub Copilot and Claude agents, letting developers work across multiple project folders in one editor chat view.
Agent hooks still stay limited to a single workspace folder, and VS Code prompts users to choose a primary folder when hooks are detected in more than one location.
New chat features include customizable background images or icon patterns in the Agents window and enterprise controls that can keep dictation transcription on-device while blocking cloud or Copilot transcript cleanup.
