Republican senators have joined a petition by some 9/11 families seeking to block New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani from attending this year’s 25th-anniversary ceremony at Ground Zero.
Critics point to Mamdani’s annual 9/11 messages, which they say changed little from 2019 through 2024 and paired mourning for victims with references to the wars that followed.
Online opponents including Bill Ackman and other conservative commentators argue the posts avoid naming terrorism, the hijackers or first responders, casting them as evasive or morally equivalent.
The backlash widened after users highlighted similar copy-and-paste Holocaust Remembrance Day posts from 2021 to 2023, reinforcing claims that Mamdani’s commemorative statements are formulaic.
Mamdani’s office did not immediately respond, leaving the dispute to sharpen political tensions around how New York’s mayor marks the Sept. 11 attacks.
