Ohio is facing its third measles outbreak of 2026, with cases in Tuscarawas, Ashtabula, Geauga and Wayne counties concentrated in unvaccinated communities.
CDC data ties that spread to weakening coverage: 5.7% of Ohio kindergartners received vaccine exemptions last school year, up from pre-pandemic levels and above the roughly 4% national rate.
More than 7,000 of those exemptions for the 2025-2026 school year were non-medical, while only 249 were for medical reasons, underscoring that most skipped shots were not health-related.
Doctors warned measles can do far more than cause rash and fever, citing a death rate of about 3 in 1,000, months of immune-system damage, and a rare fatal brain disease that can emerge 7 to 10 years later.
The outbreak comes during the worst U.S. measles year in three decades, even as President Donald Trump has called for fewer required childhood vaccines and a breakup of the MMR shot.
