California Registry Probes 6 Ewing Sarcoma Cases in Ladera Ranch

At least six Ewing sarcoma cases diagnosed in Ladera Ranch between 2013 and 2024 have prompted the California Cancer Registry to review whether the 26,000-resident community has a cancer cluster; results are expected this fall.
Ewing sarcoma is exceptionally rare—about 200 U.S. children and teens are diagnosed each year—and specialists said the local tally appears unusual, even though proving any shared cause would be extremely difficult.
Residents, galvanized by deaths including 17-year-old Brody Matteson in March and Ryan Regan in 2025, formed Ladera Health Watch to collect health data and press for official scrutiny.
That effort has widened to possible environmental exposures, including paused pesticide use, two abandoned oil wells under the development, and emissions from the nearby Prima Deshecha Landfill.
Experts and state officials caution that even if a cluster is confirmed, coincidence may explain it, and no environmental cause for Ewing sarcoma has been established.
