Summary
Chicago police raised the injury toll to 14 after gunfire killed 35-year-old Rontonio M. Guterz during a crowd dispersal at Washington Park late Saturday.
Police said unknown shooter(s) fired from across the street into several gatherings near South Cottage Grove Avenue around 11:30 p.m., as officers were monitoring the event.
One victim remained in serious condition, 10 were listed in fair to good condition, and the status of three others was not immediately known; no officers were injured.
Detectives canvassed the park Sunday after the shooting disrupted a reunion for former Robert Taylor Homes residents, with witnesses and violence-interruption workers describing people scrambling to find relatives.
Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker condemned the attack, which added to Chicago's recurring mass shootings linked to large outdoor gatherings.
