August 31 testing for Xbox Insiders will let players insert supported Xbox One or Series X discs once to claim a digital entitlement and then play without the disc.
Microsoft said the entitlement works for most disc-based titles and can also unlock supported Xbox Play Anywhere, PC access and Xbox Cloud Gaming features.
One revokable license is tied to each game disc, so a resold or loaned disc can transfer that entitlement to a new account while the physical disc still keeps working normally.
Publisher opt-ins and some manufacturing differences appear to limit coverage, which may explain why not all Xbox One and Series X games qualify and why Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are excluded.
