Bill Gates said some roles should be kept "human reserved" to stop AI and robots from displacing work that should remain person-to-person, especially in care and delivering grave medical news.
In his 6,000-word essay, Gates warned many jobs will disappear forever and said governments are not prepared for AI's reach across national security, employment, education, taxation, public health and elections.
He argued the response needs a domestic and international framework larger than the post-9/11 US security reorganization, questioning whether existing institutions can build and enforce it.
US-China cooperation is part of that effort, he said, with his staff seeking a November meeting with Xi Jinping on mitigating AI risks.
Gates also warned heavier AI use may weaken critical thinking in education, citing a preliminary survey that found a stronger effect among young people.
