Summary
Yellow warnings will cover much of southern and central England, east Wales and parts of northern England on Wednesday and Thursday, with London among the areas at risk.
Warm, humid air moving north from France is expected to trigger widespread thunderstorms, bringing 20-30mm of rain in under an hour on Wednesday and up to 40-50mm in two to three hours in the hardest-hit spots.
A second warning starts at 06:00 BST on Thursday as slow-moving storms threaten the Midlands, Wales and northern England with another 20-30mm in three hours and isolated totals above 75mm in 12 hours.
Large hail, frequent lightning and gusty winds are also possible, while parched ground could worsen flash flooding because hard, dry soil absorbs heavy downpours poorly.
The Met Office said thunderstorm forecasts remain highly uncertain because small shifts in temperature, humidity and wind can sharply change where storms form and track.
