The House Energy and Commerce Committee in June asked the White House and FBI to investigate foreign efforts to obstruct U.S. data center construction, framing the buildout as critical AI infrastructure.
Bitcoin Policy Institute reporting cited in the article says groups tied to Neville Roy Singham helped delay or block about $24 billion in proposed AI-infrastructure investment through local anti-data-center campaigns.
The report links those campaigns to fights in places including East Charlotte, North Carolina, and Prince George's County, Maryland, where opposition has focused on power use, water consumption and electricity costs.
Supporters of the buildout argue the projects also bring sizable local revenue, pointing to a Meta site in Louisiana that helped fund nearly $51,000 teacher bonuses and Loudoun County's expected $1.3 billion in 2027 data-center tax revenue.
The dispute is widening into a national-security and political fight, with advocates warning that slowing U.S. AI infrastructure could aid China even as both Republican and Democratic candidates tap local backlash ahead of the midterms.
