Initial tests cooled the linked setup—more than 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide—to 4 Kelvin in under 5 days, then to below 15 millikelvin shortly after.
Each module provides up to 12 times more wiring space than IBM’s most widely used quantum systems, supporting direct chip-to-chip links through its L-coupler technology.
By later this year, IBM plans to install Nighthawk processors for expanded performance testing, ahead of a 2027 target to link multiple processors into a system with at least 1,000 programmable qubits.
The modular design is central to IBM’s roadmap for scaling to thousands of qubits per module, alongside earlier advances in error correction and decoding needed for fault-tolerant quantum computing.
