Caroline Bryan's Family Sues Cardiff Council Over 46-Year-Old's Asbestos Death

A High Court claim filed by Caroline Bryan's family accuses Cardiff council of causing her mesothelioma death at 46 through asbestos exposure at Fitzalan High School in the 1990s; the case is due in early 2027.
Council documents cited by the family's lawyers show asbestos was used extensively at the old school site, where broken ceiling tiles, damaged walls and disturbed dust may have released fibres.
Bryan, a mostly stay-at-home mother with no obvious workplace or home exposure, died just three months after diagnosis, far younger than most mesothelioma patients, who are typically in their 80s.
Cardiff council declined to comment on the live case but said asbestos management in its buildings is taken seriously and records, surveys and condition checks are regularly maintained.
The lawsuit lands amid wider concern over school asbestos in Wales: FOI responses showed 76% of primary schools and 81% of secondary schools still contain asbestos-containing materials.
