Summary
Redfin will reenter the rental advertising market under a settlement with the FTC and five states, announced Monday just before the antitrust case was set to move toward trial.
The case targeted a 2025 partnership in which Zillow allegedly paid Redfin $100 million to stop competing for rental advertisers for as long as nine years.
Under the order, Redfin can still display Zillow listings but may again sell its own ads, show listings from its own clients, pursue property managers independently and avoid sharing sensitive business information with Zillow.
FTC and state enforcers said the arrangement could have let Zillow raise prices, worsen terms for property managers and reduce listing quality for renters, while the companies had defended it as expanding listing access.
The settlement adds to a broader antitrust push against dominant platforms, coming months after the DOJ's Ticketmaster deal and a separate April court win by 26 states against Live Nation.
