More than 100 years after serious rotating-station concepts emerged, no space agency has built one, even though the underlying physics is well understood.
The main obstacle has been cost and scale: comfortable 1 g artificial gravity would require structures hundreds or even thousands of meters across, while nonrotating stations can be assembled from simpler modules, trusses, solar arrays and docking ports.
U.S. and Soviet programs repeatedly advanced station design without adopting rotation, from Convair’s 1960-61 MARS mockup and NASA’s 18-person Olympus study to the Air Force’s MOL, which was canceled in 1969 after hardware and astronaut selection.
Actual stations followed the cheaper path—Salyut 1 launched in 1971, Skylab hosted crews for up to 84 days in 1973, and Mir’s modular core reached orbit in 1986—showing long-duration flight was possible without artificial gravity.
That history left rotating wheels as a recurring engineering proposal rather than an operational necessity, despite decades of concern over microgravity’s effects on bones, muscles, cardiovascular systems and eyes.
