That clearly reopened the title fight and gave Kyle Kirkwood fresh momentum after a dominant win in Washington, where he led 128 of 147 laps and beat Christian Lundgaard by just over three seconds. Even so, Palou remains in control. A 91-point cushion this late in the season is still substantial by IndyCar standards, and recent reporting noted that since reunification in 2008, the biggest comeback from four races out to win the championship was 59 points. On that measure alone, Kirkwood still faces a historically difficult task. What the Freedom 250 did change was the tone of the championship. Instead of a near-coronation, the season now heads to the Milwaukee doubleheader and Laguna Seca with pressure restored. Kirkwood has become a legitimate threat, especially after proving again how strong he is on street circuits, while Lundgaard also tightened his hold on third in the standings. The bigger test is whether Palou’s D.C. collapse was a one-off or a sign of vulnerability under pressure. If he returns to his usual consistency, the season likely remains his. If mistakes carry into Milwaukee, the Freedom 250 may be remembered as the day the title race truly came back to life.
