Summary
Tickets went on sale at 2 p.m. for Jacque’s two-hour “Market Rate” performances on Sept. 23, a pair of Market Basket-inspired drag and burlesque shows in Boston.
About 60 performers auditioned and roughly a dozen were selected for the two-act lineup, which includes drag, burlesque, possible live singing and a rotisserie chicken-eating competition.
Gnat, a co-organizer and producer, said the idea began as a joke among friends and grew because hyper-local New England references resonate strongly with audiences.
The 21-plus shows also double as a fundraiser, with Jacque’s collecting donations for Haley House and the West Roxbury and Allston-Brighton food pantries.
The tribute gives the grocery chain a lighter spotlight after Market Basket recently drew headlines when longtime CEO Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted by its board.
