Three people wearing headlamps and overalls were filmed climbing out of a Manhattan manhole near Penn Station around 4 a.m. Tuesday, and the NYPD says it is investigating.
Video showed the group pulling themselves up from underground and running off; police inspected the sewer system afterward, and no motive or arrests were immediately reported.
Two similar overnight incidents in Brooklyn earlier this summer also involved people entering or leaving manholes and spending hours below ground before departing, including one group that left in a vehicle.
NYPD has previously said there was no public threat, while a law-enforcement theory cited by local media suggested some trespassers may have been searching for valuables.
The Department of Environmental Protection says entering the city's 7,400-mile sewer network is illegal and extremely dangerous because of deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding and confined spaces.
