No. A code-in-box Call of Duty on Switch 2 is a strong sign of where some big third-party games are heading, but it does not mean the sudden death of physical Nintendo games. What it does show is a split market. Activision appears to be treating Modern Warfare 4 as a digital-style product on Switch 2 because Call of Duty now depends on huge downloads, constant updates, online systems, and in some modes continuous internet support. That makes a true cartridge release less practical, and retailers such as Video Games Plus are pushing back because a code-in-box offers none of the usual benefits of physical media: no cartridge, no resale, no lending, and weaker long-term preservation. But Switch 2 itself still supports real physical software. Nintendo’s own format includes traditional game cards with full game data on the cartridge, and many titles continue to use them. The bigger shift is not the end of physical media, but the rise of hybrids like Nintendo’s game-key cards, which still come with a cartridge and can be resold or shared, even though the game must be downloaded. So the real warning from Call of Duty is narrower: for live-service, storage-heavy AAA games, especially from third parties, boxed copies may increasingly function as digital purchases. That is different from saying Nintendo physical games are disappearing across the board. Physical on Switch 2 is being diluted and fragmented, not abruptly killed.

Switch 2 cartridges are expensive for publishers, especially for large third-party games. Call of Duty also relies on huge downloads, constant updates, online systems, and ongoing multiplayer content, so much of the game experience would need internet access and storage space anyway. That weakens the value of putting the full game on a cartridge. There is also a format issue. On Switch 2, publishers can choose among full game cards, game-key cards, and plain code-in-box packages. A code-in-box is the cheapest route, though it offers the least value to collectors because there is no cartridge to lend, trade, or preserve. So the box exists less to deliver software than to maintain retail distribution, giftability, and shelf visibility while avoiding cartridge manufacturing costs. That is why some retailers and fans are pushing back: they see it as a digital sale wrapped in plastic.
