Summary
Matthew Sweeney, 21, is set to be arraigned Monday in Woburn District Court on felony motor vehicle homicide, OUI and operating to endanger charges after Saturday night’s fatal North Reading crash.
Police said Sweeney was driving an Acura MDX at a high rate of speed on Route 28 around 10:45 p.m. when he slammed into a Honda HR-V stopped at a red light.
Two occupants of the Honda — a man and a minor — were pronounced dead at the scene despite rescue attempts by first responders and a Good Samaritan; earlier reports identified them as a father and his 8-year-old daughter.
Andover Public Schools said the child was an incoming third-grade student at South School and will offer crisis support and on-site mental health services on Aug. 24 and 25 as the investigation continues.
