Stetson Bennett Sparks Rams' 34-0 Rout of Saints With 2 Rushing TDs

Q: Despite Stetson Bennett's breakout performance, could Ty Simpson's quiet efficiency actually steal the Rams' backup quarterback job?

Probably not right now, though Ty Simpson has kept the competition alive. Bennett did more than post flashy numbers in the Rams’ 34-0 win over New Orleans. He ran the offense for an entire first half, completed 19 of 31 passes for 181 yards, led four scoring drives, and added two rushing touchdowns. Just as important for Sean McVay’s staff, he has the experience edge in the system and has been taking the bulk of the higher-value reps throughout camp, especially when Matthew Stafford rests. McVay has publicly praised Bennett’s command, decision-making and growth. Simpson’s case is different but still real. His 8-for-12, 73-yard line against the Saints was modest, yet efficient, and broader preseason coverage says he also impressed in the opener against Kansas City. He has shown accuracy, calm decision-making and enough poise to stay in the conversation. If the Rams were choosing strictly on upside, Simpson’s draft status and long-term value would matter. But the current evidence still favors Bennett for the immediate backup role. The Rams are a win-now team, and Bennett looks more prepared today to function as Stafford’s direct reserve. Simpson appears more likely to open as the No. 3 quarterback while continuing to develop. What could change that is if Simpson keeps stacking efficient outings and Bennett slips in the final preseason game or practices. For now, though, Bennett’s stronger body of work, larger role and familiarity with the offense make him the safer favorite.
