CDC data now shows COVID-19 infections are increasing or likely increasing in all 50 states, with the biggest gains in the South and West as late summer ends.
Just 17.5% of adults got the last COVID shot, and doctors say weak vaccine uptake plus limited recent infection-driven immunity are leaving communities more vulnerable heading into fall.
Doctors said current illness is still generally at lower levels than last year and often starts with runny nose, congestion, sore throat and fever, though severe cases can bring cough and shortness of breath.
Experts urged vaccination, better indoor air hygiene and testing after symptoms; people who test positive should isolate and contact a doctor about treatment such as Paxlovid.
Xocova can also be used within 72 hours of direct exposure for people 12 and older, a sign officials expect cases to keep climbing into the fall and early winter.
