Abbott Seeks DOJ Probe of 2 Texas Airports Over Muslim Ablution Stations

Q: Could removing specialized airport washing stations actually create slip hazards and safety issues in standard public restrooms?

Yes. Removing dedicated ablution or wudu stations could shift ritual washing back into standard airport restrooms, where it is more likely to create wet floors, awkward foot-lifting at sinks, and potential slip risks. That safety argument is not just theoretical. Airport officials and Muslim advocates have said the purpose of low-level washing basins is to keep water off restroom floors and away from counters. DFW’s project description said the stations were intended to “prevent water on standard restroom floors and protect sink counters.” Houston officials likewise said travelers previously used ordinary sinks and other public water facilities for washing, which highlighted the need for a designated space. There is also a practical design issue. Wudu involves washing feet, hands, face and arms under running water. In a standard sink, washing feet can require lifting a leg to hip height, an awkward movement that can be difficult for older travelers, disabled passengers, or anyone carrying bags. That increases the chance of splashing and slipping nearby. None of that alone settles the legal dispute over whether airports should provide such facilities. But on operations and safety, dedicated stations can reduce the mess and hazard created when a practice with heavy water use is redirected into spaces not designed for it. Whether airports can address that through open-access washing facilities, rather than explicitly faith-linked ones, may be the key policy question.

Friday’s letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche asked the Justice Department to investigate ablution stations at DFW and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental, which Greg Abbott called discriminatory "Muslim-only spaces."
Abbott compared the foot-washing facilities to "white-only bathrooms" and also objected to a prayer room at Bush airport containing Qurans, prayer rugs, prayer beads and a turbah.
DFW already scrapped plans for 2 additional pre-security ablution stations after Abbott earlier referred the issue to the Transportation Department and threatened to pull state funding.
CAIR’s Texas chapter called the dispute a "manufactured controversy" and said the washing station would be legally accessible to any traveler, not just Muslims.
The stations have existed at DFW since at least 2019 after an interfaith chapel remodel, turning the fight into a broader clash over religious accommodation at public airports.
