Markey Draws Fire Over AI Debate Answer at 80 as Moulton Presses Age Issue

Ed Markey came under fresh criticism after saying in Thursday’s debate that he uses “whatever is inside” his iPhone and iPad when asked whether he uses AI platforms.
Seth Moulton, 47, laughed at the answer onstage and said it showed Markey should not be re-elected, arguing a senator who does not understand AI cannot regulate it safely.
Democratic voices beyond the campaign also piled on, with former Obama aide Tommy Vietor calling it a “terrible answer” and Y Combinator partner Ankit Gupta labeling it “career ending.”
The clash sharpened Moulton’s broader case ahead of the Sept. 1 primary that Markey, 80, represents an aging political class even as the senator has authored several AI regulation bills.
