Police said the person killed in Friday’s sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta was a 17-year-old girl, with an 18-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
Two boys aged 12 and 17 were seriously injured and a third person suffered minor injuries in the assault at the high school, which has just under 500 students.
Police fired shots after being called to the scene but have not said whether the suspect was hit before being detained; investigators have since carried out two house searches.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school on Saturday as flower tributes grew, while the regional state of emergency imposed after the attack was later lifted.
