USGS placed the quake about 38 km northwest of Upahuacho at roughly 67 km depth and estimated 35,000 people felt strong shaking, with nearly 200,000 experiencing moderate shaking.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake posed no tsunami threat, while USGS issued a green alert indicating a low likelihood of fatalities and major economic losses.
Peru sits on the boundary of the Nazca and South American plates along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes are frequent.
