An 8-year-old Sudbury boy died after a falling tree struck him Tuesday morning at Camp Chickami in Wayland, police and fire officials said Wednesday.
Around 10:40 a.m., responders found the child in critical condition and flew him to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later died of life-threatening injuries.
Police said the trees fell in a domino effect in a wooded area, with one large tree bringing down another and branches hitting both the camper and an adult counselor.
The counselor suffered less serious injuries and was released from a local hospital, while the YMCA day camp for children ages 6 to 14 stayed closed Wednesday after shutting following the incident.
Wayland officials and YMCA leaders said the community was grieving the loss and urged families and staff to seek support as the investigation continues.
