The bigger obstacle is that the original reason for the spin-off shifted. The McConaughey idea surfaced in 2023 when Sheridan was working through how to end Yellowstone and whether Kevin Costner would stay. Since then, Yellowstone has ended, Costner’s character was written out, and Paramount moved ahead with other continuations of the franchise instead, including Dutton Ranch and Marshals. That changed the franchise map and reduced the urgency of a McConaughey-led replacement or extension. There is also a creative question still unresolved: what exactly the show would be. Sheridan has said McConaughey fits naturally in Yellowstone’s world, and McConaughey was drawn to its clash between the raw West and modern life. But interest is not the same as a developed series. Cole Hauser has also clarified that McConaughey’s rumored project is separate from Dutton Ranch, meaning it is not already quietly in production under another title. In short, the hold-up is not a public falling-out or cancellation. It is that Sheridan and McConaughey have not yet turned broad conversations into a concrete pitch that Paramount has formally put into production.

Matthew McConaughey, 56, said his rumored "Yellowstone" spin-off remains undeveloped, with "nothing's real yet" despite continued talks with creator Taylor Sheridan.
Those discussions trace back to 2023, when Sheridan said McConaughey was a "natural fit" after the actor responded to the show's clash between a raw and modern world.
"Yellowstone" ended in December 2024 without Kevin Costner, whose character was killed off-screen after he did not return for the second half of season five.
The franchise has kept expanding anyway: Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly were announced in August 2024 for spin-off "Dutton Ranch," which moved Beth and Rip from Montana to Texas.
