San Diego County Confirms 1st Clade I Mpox Case, Traced to International Travel

A San Diego County resident has been confirmed with Clade I mpox — the county’s first such case — after likely exposure during international travel to an area where the strain is circulating.
County health officials are monitoring identified contacts, and no one has reported symptoms; they said the risk to the general public remains very low.
Two-dose JYNNEOS vaccination offers the strongest protection against both Clade I and II mpox, and officials urged higher-risk people, exposed individuals and some travelers to complete the series.
Clade I, linked to Central Africa and increasingly seen in Eastern Africa and beyond, may be more severe than Clade II, which has circulated in San Diego County since 2022.
San Diego County has reported 27 mpox cases this year, mostly in people not fully vaccinated; all involved men aged 17 to 53.
