Senate Democrats unanimously killed Sen. Jon Husted’s voter ID bill in a late-night vote, denying Republicans a standalone piece of Trump’s SAVE America Act before the chamber left town.
Schumer had said in March that “Democrats support voter ID” and noted it appeared in prior Democratic voting legislation, but he and the entire caucus still voted no.
Husted’s measure would have barred state and local officials from issuing federal-election ballots without valid identification, including a driver’s license, passport, military ID or tribal ID.
Republicans framed the vote as a test of Democratic consistency after earlier SAVE America efforts also failed on party lines in March, with Mike Lee arguing many Democrats had privately accepted voter ID.
The clash lands as senators depart until early September, leaving Trump’s election bill stalled and pushing the fight into the final stretch before midterms that could shift Senate control.
