Massive AI data centers are pushing up smartphone prices because they are soaking up the same memory supply that phones need, while memory makers are steering capacity toward the most profitable AI products. The core issue is DRAM. Smartphones use LPDDR5X, AI servers use HBM and large amounts of LPDDR and server DRAM, and all of it ultimately competes for limited wafer capacity at a market dominated by Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. As hyperscalers build AI clusters with racks packed with NVIDIA Blackwell and Grace systems, they buy memory at enormous scale. Analysts say AI could consume about 20% of DRAM wafer capacity in 2026, while suppliers are reallocating more lines to HBM because margins are far higher. That squeezes consumer electronics. Building new memory fabs takes years, so supply cannot quickly catch up. The result is a seller’s market: memory prices have surged, and phone makers either raise prices, reduce specifications, or both. Google has openly cited a supplier-driven RAM crisis for Pixel price adjustments, and leaks suggest the Pixel 11 Pro may cost $100 more while the base version drops from 16GB to 12GB RAM, even if storage increases. This is not just a Google problem. Apple, Samsung, PC makers, and console vendors are facing the same pressure. For consumers, it means the AI boom is being paid for partly through more expensive devices, weaker base configurations, and fewer generous memory upgrades in mainstream products.
