Draper-area farmers and local food sellers are urging shoppers to buy nearby produce as Utah health officials investigate a cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened people in the state.
22-year farmer Russell Hatfield said direct-from-farm sales reduce shipping and handling, while his operation regularly tests water and hopes outbreak headlines do not deter people from buying fresh produce.
Consumers at the Draper farmers market said the outbreak has made them more cautious about restaurant vegetables and more likely to wash produce or choose food from local growers.
Crofter Market, which delivers eggs, meat and microgreens from Utah farms, said some customers are already avoiding nonlocal berries and seeking shorter supply chains they see as lower risk.
