A White House letter sent this week tells Lisa Cook that President Donald Trump is considering removing her from the Federal Reserve Board and gives her until Aug. 26 to contest the move.
The renewed effort follows the Supreme Court’s 5-4 June ruling that let Cook keep her seat while challenging Trump’s earlier firing attempt, while signaling he could try again with proper notice.
Trump’s case rests on mortgage-fraud allegations first referred last August, claiming Cook listed homes in Ann Arbor and Atlanta as primary residences in 2021.
Cook and her lawyer Abbe Lowell say the allegations are baseless, arguing the Ann Arbor home was her main residence and the Atlanta designation was an isolated notation, and they plan to challenge any removal again.
The dispute has become a test of presidential power over the Fed, with Cook saying Trump is using a manufactured pretext to pressure a central bank official over interest-rate decisions.
