Lightcurve Launches 8 Gbps Fiber in Tacoma as First Provider to Offer Speed

Q: Tacoma now has 8 Gbps internet, but do average households even own the expensive hardware required to actually experience it?

For most households, no: an 8 Gbps plan is far beyond what their current home hardware — and daily needs — can use. To actually see anything close to 8 Gbps, every link in the chain has to support multi-gig speeds: the provider’s fiber terminal, a router with at least a 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port, compatible switches, proper Ethernet cabling, and end devices with 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps network ports. Most consumer laptops, TVs, game consoles and streaming boxes still top out at 1 Gbps wired, and many homes still rely on older Wi‑Fi gear that cannot deliver anywhere near 8 Gbps to a single device. That does not mean the service is pointless. An 8 Gbps connection can spread bandwidth across many devices at once and offers headroom for heavy users with NAS systems, large cloud backups, remote work, AI workloads, content creation or home labs. Newer Wi‑Fi 7 routers and some mesh systems now include 10 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps ports, and prices have fallen, but building a full home network that can truly exploit 8 Gbps still costs significantly more than a standard setup. Industry guidance also suggests most homes do not need anything close to that speed. Broadband analysts generally say 200 to 300 Mbps is enough for a typical household, while even demanding homes often fit comfortably within 1 Gbps. In practice, Tacoma’s new tier is likely to appeal most to enthusiasts, small businesses and future-proofing buyers, not the average family.
