Arizona logged 171 Candida auris cases year-to-date in 2026, up from 133 in the same period of 2025, according to new CDC data.
The drug-resistant yeast spreads quickly in hospitals, nursing homes and other care facilities, and can be hard to remove from surfaces and medical equipment.
Fever and chills are possible symptoms, but some carriers show none; severe infections can enter the bloodstream, while resistance to antifungal drugs limits treatment options.
CDC says screening patients, isolating infected people, using gloves and gowns, and frequent disinfection are key to containing outbreaks.
Nationwide, 26 states had reported cases as of July 25, and CDC data show clinical cases rose to 6,304 in 2024 from 48 in 2016.
