Summary
Aug. 12 will bring the first of three 2026 CPI-W readings that feed directly into the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, giving retirees their first firmer estimate for next year.
The COLA is based on third-quarter CPI-W changes from a year earlier, so July's figure is only an early input; the final adjustment will not be set until the September reading is released on Oct. 14.
TSCL currently estimates the 2027 COLA at 3.8%, up 1 percentage point from the 2026 adjustment.
A 3.8% increase would add about $79 to the average $2,084 monthly retirement benefit recorded in June 2026, though higher Medicare Part B premiums could offset part of that gain.
Social Security recipients will get personalized COLA notices in December showing their net benefit after Part B deductions, a key figure for final 2027 budgeting.
