New Jersey regulators found 196 violations at gas stations now tied to the Freedom Fuel network since 2022, saying they repeatedly and substantially ignored state law and prior enforcement orders.
A May DEP order imposed two $50,000 fines after Atlantic County stations violated fuel-delivery bans; at one site, officials said operators cut a state seal and refilled an unregistered tank anyway.
Compliance problems continued after Trump promoted Freedom Fuel in July: one Camden County station was briefly barred from fuel deliveries on July 9, and a Burlington County site was found operating without a valid air permit.
The May penalty still had not been paid as of Thursday, according to the DEP, while two other network stations were sidelined for a week in June over tank-registration issues.
The scrutiny extends beyond tank rules: New Jersey's attorney general said in July it is investigating the Freedom Fuel network and checking compliance with state laws, including a ban on selling gasoline below cost.
