Starting next week, OpenAI will stop enforcing rate limits on text-only prompts for ChatGPT Free and Go accounts, effectively allowing unlimited text chats.
GPT-5.6 Luna becomes the default model for those tiers this week, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant, and a new Think button will let users ask for extra reasoning without limit in text chats.
Limits still apply when users add images or files, generate images, or use voice mode, with those actions counting against separate usage caps.
Plus and Pro users are getting an updated GPT-5.6 Sol tuned for everyday conversations, along with a slider to control how much thought ChatGPT puts into answers.
OpenAI framed the move as a step toward wider access and more reliable AI, while the report linked the change to lower inference costs or a possible efficiency breakthrough.
