Honeywell Aerospace sank 21.3% and AppLovin dropped 19.3% after disappointing or mixed results, while Warner Bros. Discovery rose 1.3% and Molson Coors added 1.8% on stronger earnings.
About 85% of S&P 500 companies have reported, with earnings growth on track for its strongest quarter since 2021, helping ease concerns that valuations have run too far.
Brent crude climbed 2.2% to $81.23 as uncertainty persisted over a possible Strait of Hormuz reopening, keeping pressure on inflation, which remains above 3%.
That backdrop has kept the Fed on hold even as rate-hike expectations build; the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.65% ahead of Friday's July jobs report after June payroll growth slowed to 57,000.
