McVay and the staff have repeatedly praised his offseason growth, and recent reporting indicates Los Angeles has been comfortable giving him QB2-style reps when Stafford rests. Just as important, the Rams do not appear eager to make an outside move. McVay recently said adding a veteran backup is “not something” the team has really discussed, though he did not rule it out entirely. The team drafted Ty Simpson as a developmental option and has shown every sign of wanting to evaluate Bennett and Simpson through camp and preseason before considering a roster change. The Day 9 struggles also came in context. The Rams’ defense has consistently dominated camp, with Myles Garrett back, Braden Fiske active and the secondary limiting explosive plays. The offense was further hurt by repeated pre-snap penalties, so Bennett’s uneven day was not solely a quarterback problem. An emergency trade becomes more plausible only if Bennett’s inaccuracy persists into preseason games, Simpson fails to progress, or Stafford’s health creates urgency. In a clear win-now season, Los Angeles cannot afford instability behind Stafford. But based on current reporting, the Rams are still in evaluation mode, not trade mode.

Day 9 of Rams camp sharpened the backup quarterback picture little: Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn Simpson were off-target, and the offense piled up pre-snap penalties with Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams resting.
