Jordan Herrera, an attorney and Air Force veteran, won Tuesday’s seven-way Democratic primary in Missouri’s newly redrawn 4th District, defeating democratic socialist Hartzell Gray.
Gray entered as the field’s financial leader, raising about $250,000 through mid-July versus roughly $40,000 for Herrera, and drew national attention with online appearances attacking “sell-out Democrats.”
The result sends a more conventional Democrat into November against Republican Rep. Mark Alford instead of Gray, who had cast the race as a left-wing challenge to the party establishment.
Missouri’s new 4th District now includes part of Kansas City and stretches through suburban and rural areas; although less Republican than before, it still leans solidly GOP.
