Tau over the rover’s site surged from a typical 0.5 to an estimated 10.8, and the storm expanded from a regional disturbance on 30 May to 35 million square kilometres by 12 June.
Four months of darkness left the rover stuck in a low-power fault that only kept its mission clock alive; NASA formally ended recovery efforts in February 2019, closing a mission that lasted just over 15 years.
45.16 kilometres of driving and more than 5,000 charge cycles made Opportunity NASA’s off-Earth distance record holder, but the loss also pushed later surface missions away from relying on solar power.
2018’s storm still delivered science: orbiters and rovers tracked dust lofting water vapour to about 100 kilometres, supporting evidence that such storms can accelerate Mars’ long-term water loss.
